Description
Homogenized oyster mantle tissue infected with Perkinsus marinus (causitive agent for Dermo disease). Infection with P. marinus causes large annual mortality events in the the American North Atlantic coast where it remains an active threat to oyster restoration. In the Gulf of Mexico, the impact of Dermo disease remains relatively unknown. Hypnospores (black circles) represent one of the three infective life stages shed by infected oyster hosts. Hypnospores become visible when stained with Lugol’s solution.
