Beneath the Bubbles

A high-angle photograph showing a manatee's head and snout emerging from green water next to a wooden dock. The manatee's grey skin is visible beneath the surface, and it is blowing a small spray of water from its nostrils. Concentric ripples spread outward from its snout across the water's surface.

Description

I captured this photo after completing a dive in Islamorada, Florida Keys. As the manatee eagerly collects freshwater in its mouth, it appears to be smiling—a charming illusion created by its gentle nature. Although manatees are not directly related to my research, this image represents a heartfelt token of appreciation for the many fulfilling moments that come with being a marine biologist. It embodies the privilege of sharing space with incredible marine life and the joy of exploring the underwater world.
